VERTIGO

VERTIGO has a mode of action distinct from the major insecticide and acaricide groups and it is widely used in vegetables and orchards to control spider mites, leafminers, thrips and psyllids.

Spectrum of activity

VERTIGO has proved to be very effective for the control of psylla (Cacopsylla pyri). It also controls spider mites and leaf miners, and suppresses thrips and aphids.

Where other insecticides or acaricides have been unsuccessful because of pest resistance, VERTIGO, with its novel mode of action should prove effective.

Mode of action

VERTIGO penetrates leaf tissue by translaminar movement to create a reservoir of product within the leaf that provides extended residual activity, while having a minimal impact on beneficial insects. Consequentially, VERTIGO activity is not strongly affected by subsequent rainfall. Surface residues of VERTIGO quickly degrade.

VERTIGO acts in arthropods by stimulating release of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), inhibiting nerve signal transmission to muscles. The susceptible insects and mites (motile stage) become immobilised shortly after ingestion, and die. Maximum mortality is achieved in 3-5 days. Due to this unique chemistry and mode of action, cross-resistance to other pesticides is highly unlikely.

Integrated pest management

VERTIGO fits well into most IPM systems. It may have some contact activity on beneficial organisms, but this quickly falls off once the spray deposit has dried. Bees or behives should be kept away from treated glasshouses or fields for 24 hours after application of VERTIGO.
